Purpose and overview:
When the children arrive at 3:00 for the After-School Program they are always hungry! Some have lunch at school as early as 11am and are ready to eat. They all have voracious appetites and we like to give them healthy snacks when they arrive. This also makes it easier for them to settle down and concentrate on their homework as soon as snack time is over. No one wants to do math or read with a growling tummy!
Our schedule each day is:
3:15 - 3:30 Healthy Snacks
3:30 - 4:45 Homework and tutoring
4:45 - 5:30 Creative Play on Tuesdays and Thursdays
4:30 - 5:30 Christian Education on Wednesdays
6:00 Departure for home
When possible, we like to serve them a piece of fresh fruit and a small serving of a companion item. Suggestions are:
Fruits: apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, fruit salad, tangerines
Companion items: goldfish, granola or granola bars, string cheese, graham crackers with peanut butter, yogurt (strawberry is very popular), GoGurt, etc. For some reason, raisins are not on their "like" list. We avoid sugary items (Twinkies and pop tarts are NOT on our list) and always give them water to drink during snack time and at dinner. We want to be sure they are sufficiently hydrated and water spills are much easier to manage and get tables ready for homework papers!
You can sign up to provide snacks for any day listed as available on the SignUpGenius page. Since many items are perishable, we don't want to receive more food than we can use each week, so sign up is limited to one signup person per day. There are plenty of days from which to choose! Snacks can be delivered to Grace Mission Tuesdays - Fridays (we are closed on Mondays) anytime after 11am. Please be sure to mark them for the children's program so they end up in the right tummies! They may also be brought directly to The Episcopal University Center at FSU, 655 W. Jefferson St during program time Tuesday- Thursday (3 - 6pm).
