Volunteer Position: Mobile Grocery Loader
Purpose: To get all supplies loaded and ready for the 3rd Saturday Mobile Grocery at Springfield Apartments (aka Joe Louis)
The third Saturday of each month we have a free Mobile Grocery in Springfield Apartments, Tallahassee’s largest public housing project, at 1700 Joe Louis Street. We rent a 26’ refrigerated truck the Friday before and load it with the products we will be distributing. We load pallets of canned goods from our supply at Grace Mission, go to Second Harvest Food Bank to pick up additional groceries, and go to Farm Share in Quincy to pick up fresh produce, when available. The truck is then ready to pull out on Saturday morning and distribute the groceries to residents of Joe Louis.
We call this our One Campaign – One Church, One Saturday. We ask one church or group to sign up for one Saturday once a year to help do client intake and deliver and distribute wholesome nutritional food to those in need. On Friday we need volunteers to help load the truck.
Location: Grace Mission, 303 West Brevard Street
Schedule: Need 3 - 4 people the Friday before the “third Saturday” of each month. Loading begins at 3:00pm and takes approximately 1 – 2 hours.
- Lift heavy cases of food and load them on the truck
- Follow all safety rules and guidelines for lifting
- Sign up a week in advance to volunteer so we know we have coverage
- Sign in and out on our volunteer log each time you participate
